Sightings, Beijing 2007 17 May to 1 June 2007 Private View: Thursday 17 May from 7.00 to 9.00 pm Artworks by Carola Syz Sarzi-Amade 'Sightings' is a continuation of the artist's previous series - 'Yin and Yang' - and explores the two sides of modern Beijing -- opposites attracting and complementing each other. This series of photographic works shot in Beijing at the beginning of this year suggests a voyage through life at high speed, grasping superficial temptations readily available, and most often missing life's more profound and spiritual aspects. With 'Sightings' the artist wants to make a point of the radical change in the Far East. China seems to be abandoning its spiritual and ancient culture, traditions, religions and philosophy, and has now caught up, if not surpassed, the western world in the pursuit of external values. Carola’s intention is for these images to be viewed as a form of meditation; the message to the viewer is to imagine a ride through life, where underneath this 'shiny' facade a more meaningful way of living can be detected and then we are reminded to STOP when the train of life gathers too much speed.
